Ephesians 1:15-18
Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling
Paul prays for certain people. He has become aware of those who are marked by faith in the Lord Jesus and who are known for having love for all the saints. First and foremost Paul is full of thankfulness, he's overflowing with gratitude for a people who trust Jesus and who in turn love those whom Jesus has called out to be His own.
The first item Paul mentions is that He wants God to give those people something. Paul starts by revealing his desires that are reflected in his own prayers. His first desire is a gift from God, that God would give something. That something is a spirit. All other items on Paul's prayer list in this section of scripture depend on that. In particular, the second item (the eyes of our understanding, what we see with our heart, being flooded with light) depends on God having first given a spirit. The flood of new understanding of the ways and purposes of God, the flood of seeing God Himself comes only after having first received a gift from God, a spirit. Paul wants others to receive a gift from God. Paul knows that people need a spirit that brings two things: wisdom and revelation. But the spirit doesn't really bring those, it is the spirit of those. God gives the spirit of wisdom, the personal presence of wisdom. God gives the spirit of revelation. Revelation means an uncovering, the personal presence of an uncovering, the presence of a ripping off of the covers.
Having received the gift of that spirit, then inside of you is the flow, the breeze, the moving currents of wisdom. Inside of you is the flow, the almost imperceptible yet also massive and moving energy of an uncovering. In you, in your thoughts and emotions, are movements. In you is the motion of a force that uncovers God to you. The spirit, the breath, a gentle breeze or even a brisk windy gust of an uncovering of God to you, but happening in you. The Spirit of Uncovering. Then the eyes of your understanding are flooded with light, with new awareness. Then you realize that you possess a new and confident expectation. Looking at yourself in the mirror you realize you are bursting, you're pregnant! There's something alive and growing inside you now, you are expecting! The Spirit of Uncovering has caused you to know the hope of His calling. You now have confident expectation as a general attitude. You realize you are one of those that the Master has called out to be one of His own. Using the words that Jesus mentioned about Paul: you are his chosen vessel. He needed you as a carrier. You hold Him and carry His presence, His Spirit. You have received the Spirit of Wisdom. You carry the Spirit of Uncovering.
